Sound

There are different ways that sound is used in films.

Diegetic sound is also known as actual sound which is sound that the character and audience can hear. E.g. dog barking or cars going by. Non-diegetic also known as commentary sound which is sound that the audience can hear but the characters cannot for example music is often non diegetic sound, sound effects and the narrator's commentary.

On screen sound is when the audience can see the source of the sound on screen. Off screen sound is when the audience cannot see the source of the sound. Parallel sound is when the sound matches the action. Contrapuntal sound is sound that doesn't fit the action that is on screen. Finally a sound bridge is when sound has a smooth transition between shots so if in one shot their are people talking quietly and the next shot is 2 people shouting at each other there has to be a smooth transition between the 2 shots otherwise it will affect the shot. and a sound bridge is known to bridge the gap between both shots this is why it is called a sound bridge.
